Background of the study:
Secondary school education is increasingly augmented by digital learning tools that provide personalized support to students. In Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, traditional tutoring methods and static educational materials often fail to meet the diverse learning needs of students. The development of an IoT‐based smart AI-powered chatbot for educational support represents a cutting-edge solution by integrating artificial intelligence with IoT connectivity to deliver real-time academic assistance. Such chatbots can interact with students through natural language processing, answering queries, providing study resources, and offering personalized learning guidance (Ibrahim, 2023). Embedded sensors and connected devices enable the chatbot to access real-time data on student performance and adapt its responses accordingly. Moreover, the integration of machine learning algorithms facilitates continuous improvement in the accuracy and relevance of educational support provided. This system not only enhances individual learning experiences but also reduces the burden on teachers by offering immediate assistance outside classroom hours (Adeniyi, 2024). The chatbot can operate on multiple platforms, including mobile apps and web interfaces, ensuring accessibility across diverse student populations. Its ability to deliver customized feedback, monitor student progress, and suggest remedial measures aligns with the principles of personalized learning and adaptive education. By leveraging IoT connectivity, the chatbot system collects data from various educational tools and devices, enabling a holistic approach to student assessment and support (Udo, 2025). This innovative solution has the potential to transform secondary education in Jalingo LGA by providing scalable, on-demand academic support that enhances student engagement and academic performance.

Statement of the problem:
Secondary school students in Jalinglo LGA face challenges in accessing timely academic support due to traditional educational methods that lack personalization and real-time responsiveness (Ibrahim, 2023). Conventional tutoring is often limited by resource constraints and scheduling conflicts, leaving many students without immediate assistance when facing academic difficulties. The absence of interactive, adaptive learning tools results in a one-size-fits-all approach that fails to address individual learning gaps. Furthermore, teachers are frequently overburdened, reducing their ability to provide personalized attention to every student. This gap in support services leads to decreased student engagement, lower academic performance, and a growing disparity in educational outcomes. Manual intervention and static learning materials do not adjust to the evolving needs of students, further exacerbating these issues (Adeniyi, 2024). Financial and logistical constraints also limit the availability of supplementary educational programs in many secondary schools. Without the implementation of an AI-powered, IoT-based chatbot system that offers real-time, personalized academic support, students may continue to struggle in silence, negatively impacting their confidence and overall educational development (Udo, 2025). A robust digital solution is therefore critical to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and individual student needs, thereby promoting equitable learning opportunities and improved academic success.

Objectives of the study:

  • To design and develop an IoT-based smart AI-powered chatbot tailored for secondary school educational support.

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the chatbot in enhancing student academic performance and engagement.

  • To recommend strategies for integrating the chatbot with existing educational platforms and teacher support systems.

Research questions:

  • How effective is the AI-powered chatbot in providing personalized academic support in real time?

  • What improvements in student engagement and academic performance are observed after the chatbot’s implementation?

  • How can the chatbot be integrated with current educational practices to complement teacher instruction?

Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it introduces an innovative digital tool to provide real-time, personalized academic support for secondary school students. By leveraging IoT connectivity and AI, the chatbot can address individual learning needs, enhance student engagement, and reduce teacher workload. The findings will inform educational policymakers and practitioners on the effective integration of digital learning tools to improve academic outcomes in resource-constrained environments.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to the analysis and development of an IoT-based smart AI-powered chatbot for secondary school educational support in Jalinglo LGA, Taraba State. It does not extend to other educational levels or regions.
